Located three miles outside of California City lies a gem in the desert where hundreds of riders gather to test their skills and have fun on the track — the one and only Cal City Motocross Park. The brainchild of owners John and Inge Elmes, Cal City MX Park opened its gates April 1, 2006. CCMX was the childhood dream of John’s, who always wanted to own a motocross track. Add in wife and co-owner Inge and their four sons, and you have a family operation along with that dream.
The track is a National Outdoor Style track with variations in terrain and obstacles that change seasonally. CCMX runs six of their own race events annually, and another four to six races with outside promoters. The track accepts 28 different bike classes ranging from 50cc to 450cc bikes and the age range of the riders at CCMX run from 4 years old to 60-plus. CCMX hosts Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Pro classes as well as Veteran class races.
The annual season runs from September to July, and during the down season owner John works his magic creating a new course for the next season. CCMX recently hosted its third annual Central Valley Series, which runs between July and September and includes a stop at CCMX, followed by stops at Porterville MX Park, Kern County Race Park in Bakersfield, and DT1 MX Park in Tulare before returning to CCMX September 9 for the final races, trophy ceremony and barbecue.
Inge spoke to the future of CCMX stating they have big plans for the track which they hope to get started on as soon as next summer. In the meantime CCMX is hosting their first ever National Race when the OTHG racers (Over The Hill Gang) descend on CCMX to have it out in the dirt this October.
Though the track is currently closed for racing until the season opener September 1, they are open every weekend for practice on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. unless there is a race on Sunday. The track brings in hundreds of riders annually, and camping is always free. Spectators are also free on all practice days. For more info visit http://www.calcitymx.com.
