Founded in 2005, by owners John and Inge Elmes, Cal City MX Park in California City is a renowned practice and race motocross facility. Located in the center of the third largest OHV riding area in the state, this motocross park holds more than a dozen events per year. Some of those events include the AMA Loretta Lynn Qualifier and the AMA So Cal MX Series as well as the Dirt Series, So Cal Old Timers MX Series and Over the Hill Gang Race Series. John and Inge Elmes also promote two huge race series throughout the year, the Annual Central Valley MX Series and Battle at the Parks MX Series. In the past, Cal City MX Park has also held fundraisers and other events to support the community.
As a child, John Elmes dreamed of owning his own motocross park. He spent many days at Indian Dunes dreaming of the future. In 2001, he and his wife took on that dream and began a long but worthwhile venture of opening up their own facility, and on April 1, 2017, the family owned and operated park celebrated their 12th year of business.
“Our four sons are a huge part of why we began this venture and they have learned the business along with us”, says Inge. “It is a great family oriented sport, and we have met so many amazing families that have built wonderful memories along the way.”
One of the unique qualities on the location is that it allows for open riding 365 days a year. “You can moto during the day, and when the track closes, you can open ride in the desert with your entire family,” says John.
There are many riding areas close by such as Randsburg, Dove Springs, Red Rock and Jawbone Canyon. You can camp for several days and experience the best of both worlds.
The motocross track layout is an open outdoor national style with 35-foot lanes. There is a comprehensive water system throughout the entire facility to properly water during the day. The dirt is said to be the best in Southern California with a perfect combination of sand, clay and decomposed granite. It has a great flow with challenging obstacles, deep ruts and is fun for all levels. The parts shop has all of your everyday use needs along with tubes and a tire changing station. You can pick up a Cal City MX Park T-shirt or hat and buy food at their concession stand. On big weekends and race events, you will find the outdoor barbecue grilling burgers, tri-tip or chicken sandwiches and hot dogs. Trees and a shade structure with picnic tables and a grandstand finish the park for great day at the track.
“We have huge plans for the future,” says John. The Elmes’ crew is determined on making Cal City MX Park one of the best motocross parks around. They are in the process of adding to the park’s amenities and working on adding more events to the next season. The last round of the Second Annual Central Valley MX Series will be held on Sept. 17, 2017. In the works, the day before that race as soon as practice is over, they will have a local band play and the barbecue will be grilling something amazing!
“This will be the first time we have had a band play at the track,” says John. “We hope to have more racers and their families spend the weekend with us and to attract more of our local residents out to our park.”
